I am the Modern Clair

A very longtime ago (maybe five years ago), I described myself as the Modern Clair. Meaning I was the modern version of Clair Huxtable. I think that ideally society likes to label black women as almost one dimensional. However, we know that is farthest from the truth. I consider myself to be the modern Clair because a lot of my values and beliefs are the same BUT in 2019 it looks very different. Careers aren’t as traditional. Marriage and children may come later in life. Although, what remains the same are the fundamental characteristics that made Clair Huxtable who she was! She was fierce, loving, smart, funny, stylish, eloquent, beautiful and the list can go on and on. Those attributes are all true for young black women in 2019. We are so multifaceted that we embody Clair and so much more. The Cosby Show ended decades ago, but Clair’s influence still remains. We no longer have to choose the traditional route. We can do so many great things at a different pace in 2019. We are able to be all these amazing characteristics and still be a modern woman.

A feminist ahead of her time. Remember the iconic scene, where is so calmly and swiftly told Elvin not to ASSUME that she would serve her Husband but the SERVE each other. A moment in time, but a moment that will last forever. Clair Huxtable was the blueprint for how to have a career, raise a family, and maintain your peace ALL THE WHILE being absolutely flawless.
