3 Ways to Stop Comparison Struggles

Social media has caused many of us to compare our lives to the lives we see portrayed on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. Comparison can help motivate us, or more than likely, cause us to feel inadequate. It makes us feel like we aren’t doing enough. So, how do we deal with that?

  1. Learn to Love Where You Are | To crush those feelings of comparison, you have to learn to love where you are in your journey. Your life and your purpose is not meant to look like others. As cliché as it sounds, you are exactly where you need to be. Everything will come to you in due time. Take moments through out the day to be thankful and present. If you spend so much time focusing on someone else’s life, you won’t know what it means to be grateful for yours.
  2. Purge your “Competition” | Once you can appreciate your life as it is, it is time to take a social media detox. During this detox, you want to unfollow, block, and report spam to any account that does not motivate you and make you feel good about yourself. We are doing ourselves a disservice when we follow pages that don’t make us feel good. If you feel like a certain account, friend or not, makes you feel like you aren’t enough… GET RID OF THEM. Don’t explain anything to anyone. Purge anyone that makes you feel like you are competing with them. Follow pages that make you better. Follow people that inspire you and help you to change and improve your life.
  3. Celebrate All Accomplishments | Don’t wait to celebrate all that you have done. The problem with comparison is that we forget just how amazing we are. Let this be a reminder to celebrate all of your accomplishments. When you acknowledge all that you have done, you are less likely to feel like you aren’t doing enough. Celebrate whatever feels important to you. If getting high marks on all your tests for the semester is an accomplishment to you, CELEBRATE! Your major accomplishments will not look like others. They are tailored made for your life. Bask in all of the moments you accomplish your goals.
